The
YMCA Youth and Government Program
This program is an experience in the
State of Connecticut’s legislative, legal and journalistic
process. The process of developing ideas into legislation by
writing bills, caucusing, meeting in committees, debating bills,
lobbying, reporting on the process, voting on referendums and
electing officers are all part of the total program. Students
elect a Youth Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General,
Speaker of the House and Secretary of State. Through this
program, high school students actually experience the State
Legislative process.
Youth
and Government also provides a forum where students can express
their opinions openly and share their views with students from
areas, backgrounds and social conditions different from their
own, while encouraging them to examine their own personal value
systems in a non-threatening atmosphere. YMCA Youth and
Government teaches the responsibility of freedom through
personal experience.
Youth
and Government provides the YMCA with the opportunity to
influence the future leaders and citizens of our country.
This
year over 300 High School students from throughout Connecticut
are participating in Youth and Government. Two Connecticut high
schools offer Youth and Government as an honors class and award
credit. Youth and Government is open to high school students
from freshman through senior year. for the program at Danbury
High School, Immaculate High School, Henry Abbott Tech, Danbury
ConnCAP/ Upward Bound program and of course ESCAPE.
